MEET THE INTERNS » KATIE

Summer has arrived, which means school’s out and interns are in. We’ve got two stellar students spending the summer with us – they spend a few days a week at the Museum helping out with tours, doing work in the office and, most importantly, working on a self-directed project. First up is Katie – a St. Louis native home for the summer from her studies at the University of Iowa. In addition to her work with CHM, Katie is completing a conservation internship with our pals over at the Saint Louis Art Museum this summer.

What are you studying and where?  Art and Art History at the University of Iowa.

Why Campbell House?  I like the Museum’s focus on preservation.

What are you working on at CHM?  Inventory! (Katie is working on our annual collections inventory, during which she’ll check to make sure that every one of the thousands of objects in our collections are accounted for and in their proper place. If you’re thinking, “wow, that sounds like a truly massive undertaking” you’re right. Go Katie!)

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing?  Reading, usually.

What if your favorite thing about CHM so far?  I’ve really liked learning how a small museum functions.

iPhone or Android?  iPhone.

Favorite color?  Blue.

Favorite band?  Mutemath. (If you know who this is, you’re hipper than we are. We had to Google them.)

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes?  I was in two front page stories in Iowa City newspapers for my work on flood damaged books.

What’s your favorite sandwich?  Toasted PB&J

MEET THE INTERNS » DANIELLE

A new year has arrived, which means a new semester and new faces around the Museum! The CHM crew is excited to welcome two interns to our ranks for the Spring Semester, and this week we’re pleased to introduce Danielle, an undergraduate intern from UMSL’s History Department with a passion for 19th century Europe. Even though she’s only been with Campbell House for a couple of weeks now, she’s already done an impressive amount of research, a few collections preservation projects and was a huge help in undecorating the Museum for Christmas. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Danielle!

What are you studying and where?  I’m studying History with a minor in Art History at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Why Campbell House?  I chose CHM because I have a great interest in 19th century history, and for the unique role that the Campbell Family played in St. Louis history.

What are you working on at CHM?  I am helping to research and compose a nomination to designate the Campbell House Museum a National Historic Landmark(Editorial note: This is no small project! NHL status is the highest achievable designation by a private historic site in the United States. The application process that Danielle is beginning can take up to five years to complete and will have to be approved by the Secretary of the Interior.)

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing?  I’m always reading something. I also really enjoy exploring the city, hiking and traveling.

What it your favorite thing about CHM so far?  I have fallen in love with the little things throughout the house that tell the story of the people who lived here. The stained glass, the art, the textiles – they all give you an incredibly intimate look into what life was like for St. Louis and the Campbell Family.

iPhone or Android?  iPhone

Favorite Color?  Pine green

Favorite Band/Singer?  Iron and Wine

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes?  Andy Warhol had a pretty glamorous life. I’ve had a thousand incredible moments, but none of them particularly glamorous. Last Spring my husband and I hiked to the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, and standing on that peak, looking out over the land made me feel alive. Given the chance, I would choose that over fame. (Editorial note: How’s THAT for an answer?!)

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?  Jane Eyre.

It’s time for the last (but certainly not least) member of our crew of interns this summer – Anna!  She’s been with us since the beginning of the summer and unfortunately is leaving us next week to head back to school for the Fall semester.  We’ve had a blast working with her and she’s been doing some incredible work on some of the Museum’s digital initiatives – meet Anna!

What are you studying and where?  Computer Science and Art History at Truman State University (editorial note: How cool is that?! – can you think of two more completely different majors?!  Luckily her diverse skillset been a huge help here at CHM as we deal with tech issues and some other neat projects.)

Why Campbell House?  It is an amazing place and it gave me the opportunity to use both of my majors.

What are you working on at CHM?  I am creating a virtual 3D model of the Lucas Place neighborhood (Campbell House was the first house built on Lucas Place and today is the last original structure remaining) using the Virtual City platform and doing some work on CHM’s website.

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing?  I’ve been working on my summer classes in Contemporary Art and Macroeconomics, volunteering at the St. Louis Art Museum, and hanging out with friends. (one of whom is fellow intern and fellow Truman State-er Jamie)

What is your favorite thing about CHM thus far?  Tours through the house, I love all of the history of the house, the family and the neighborhood.

iPhone or Android?  Android

Favorite color?  Green

Favorite band?  Led Zepplin

Little know fact about yourself?  I have backpacked the Grand Canyon twice!

If you could have had the starring role in one film already made, what movie would you pick and why?  “Singing in the Rain” because then I’d be tap dancing machine!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, concludes our “Meet the Interns” series for the Summer of 2014. We’ve had a blast getting to know and work with such a diverse and engaging group of students over the past few months and can’t wait to see where their futures take them! Campbell House is now accepting applications for Fall 2014 interns – please visit our website for more information on student internships and other volunteer opportunities.
