Last time you met Caitie; now its time to meet James! James is diving deep into the history of the house, and also prepping to carry on our application for National Historic Landmark status. We’ll let James take it from here…

What are you studying and where? I am studying History and French at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Why Campbell House? I definitely wanted to do a history internship before graduating in December 2016, and the History Department placed me at this great museum and historical residence. I was unfamiliar with the Campbell House before my internship but I am eager to delve into its past.

What are you working on at CHM? Currently, I am studying the history of the house and the Campbells in order to give tours, while my internship project will be researching and amending documents toward the Campbell House Museum’s application to become a National Historic Landmark (carrying on an internship project that will continue for several more years).

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing? Usually, I am too busy with homework to do much else! However, in my free time I enjoy biking around our great city, vegetable gardening, singing karaoke, cooking, and partaking in the great microbrewery culture of St. Louis.

What is your favorite thing about CHM so far? So far, my favorite part about the Campbell House Museum is the decor. One of my favorite periods in history is the Victorian Era and to be immersed in a room like the Campbell’s parlor transports me back to that time.

iPhone or Android? Haha, currently neither. I have an old cell phone and have yet to upgrade to a smart phone. I will soon though, probably [One of our staff members recently “bit the bullet”, so to say, and made that transition recently too. The ranks of the “dumb phones” dwindle…].

Favorite color? My favorite color is green because it is the color of plants.

Favorite band/singer? David Bowie was and is my favorite musician. I was shocked like everyone else when he recently passed away, though the public outpouring of sympathy and respect for him and his music was impressive and comforting [The Groniger Museum in the Netherlands is representing museums well by extending hours to an exhibit they have about Bowie].

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes? I would hope it involves a sci-fi book that I am writing, and hopefully I’d be famous for how good it is rather than its wonderful abilities as a paperweight.

If you could live in a book, which one and why? I would live in a world of The Phantom Tollbooth. I first read it in grade school over 20 years ago, and still I wish I could eat words, mine for numbers, keep sounds in boxes, and listen to a symphony play music that paints the skies.

MEET THE INTERNS>>CAITIE

Intern Caitie

Intern Caitie has settled in quickly and is diving deep into the Campbell’s history. Click her picture to learn more about becoming an intern!

A new semester means new interns and new, exciting projects here at the Campbell House! Our interns range from newcomers to recent graduates to a former intern who is back for more through a work-study program. They’re already hard at work making headway in various projects. We’ll start our introductions with Caitie. Take it away…

What are you studying and where? I’ve just graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Arts in History. I hope to attend graduate school in St. Louis in the fall.

Why Campbell House? I’ve always enjoyed houses-turned museums; they constituted many family vacations as a child. Learning about the history of St. Louis through a family and their home is a joy!

What are you working on at CHM? I’m currently doing a lot of reading about the Campbells and shadowing house tours. I’ve also just gotten started on a long-running project to create a master timeline for the Campbells: what they were doing, where they were, etc.

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing? I’m usually reading, cooking , practicing yoga, catching up on my favorite British television shows, or spending time with my friends in the city.

What is your favorite thing about CHM so far? I am still amazed by the ornate Victorian furnishings and the amount of furnishing original to the house and the Campbell family [fun fact: that sense of amazement never goes away!].

iPhone or Android? Apple products all the way!

Favorite color? Green

Favorite band/singer? Twenty One Pilots

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes? One of my favorite bands once retweeted one of my tweets about their upcoming tour.

If you were in the Air Force, what would be your call sign? Maverick, for sure!

Meet the Interns » JAMIE

Summer has arrived in St. Louis, which means a new group of wonderful students interns have started with the Campbell House!  Interns play an important role at CHM throughout the year – giving tours of the house, working on special projects, and being a helpful extra set of hands around the Museum.  Over the next few weeks you’ll get to know all four of the interns we have here for Summer 2014, starting today with Jamie!

Jamie

Intern Jamie! Click to learn more about internships at the Campbell House Museum.

What are you studying and where?  English and Education at Truman State University.

Why Campbell House?  My aunts brought me on tours here with a member of the Campbell House Board of Directors and I fell in love with the histories.

What are you working on at CHM?  I’m transcribing letters and lists from Robert Campbell and assembling pieces of an index for future researchers to use.

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing?  Reading, playing piano, pestering my family and pets, and working at Family Video. I’m really easy to please and entertain.

What is your favorite thing about CHM thus far?  All of the stories and learning more about the REAL people they apply to.

iPhone or Android?  Well… iPhone… But I own both. My phone is Apple but my laptop is PC and my tablet is Android. I make it work.

Favorite color?  Purple… which is part of the reason why I chose to go to my college.

Favorite band?  Don’t make me choose! It really depends on my mood. In honor of them making a movie I’ll say Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons but I don’t have one favorite.

Little known fact about yourself?  I’m generally known as the “mom” of whatever group I’m in and I’m a cat lover.

Based on something you’ve already done, how might you make it into the Guinness Book of World Records?  The number of days every year a person can be sunburnt.
