Not all the work to be done by our volunteers and interns happens here at the Campbell House. Our next intern introduction, Alex, is hard at work parsing through archives as part of our ongoing search for Campbell-related legal documents. Here is Alex…

What are you studying and where? A BA in History at UMSL.

Why Campbell House? Because it is where I was assigned [Ed. note: Well, yes, we do like to keep on UMSL’s radar, so they’ll direct interns in our direction who have never heard or thought about us before. You don’t have to know anything about Campbell House to do valuable work here!].

What are you working on at CHM? I am working on the Campbell Family Legal Legacy Project [Ed. note: We’ve noted before this involves trips to the St. Louis Circuit Court and Missouri State Archives office to dig up old files].

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing? Hanging out with friends and family. I enjoy movies, traveling, theater, and hiking!

What is your favorite thing about CHM so far? I have loved looking through all the old documents at the Missouri State archives.

iPhone or Android? Actually, I have a Windows phone [Take that, Apple and Google!].

Favorite color? Blue&Green

Favorite band/singer? Frank Turner

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes? I was in the newspaper as a child visiting the Magic House.

If you could be teleported anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? I would love to see Machu Pichu in Peru.

MEET THE INTERNS>>EMILY

Last (but certainly not least) for this semester’s interns is Emily. Take it away…

What are you studying and where? I am majoring in history at the University of Missouri-St. Louis

Emily is hard at work giving tours and working on our National Historic Landmark application. Click her picture to learn more about internship and volunteer opportunities at CHM!

Why Campbell House? I was contacted by a professor about the possibility of doing an internship at the Campbell House. After a little research on the house, I thought it would be a great place for experience.

What are you working on at CHM? Gaining more knowledge on the Campbells and their home in order to give tours and editing/updating an application to be a National Historic Landmark (Editor’s Note: Emily is picking up where several of our interns have left off. Its a lengthy process, so we’ll be at it for a while, but right now it is Emily’s torch to bear!).

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing? When school is in session, I mainly focus on that and work. Not a lot of free time…When I do have free time, I mainly just hang out with friends or go to Blues games when it’s the season (Let’s go Blues!).

What is your favorite thing about CHM so far? The fact that visitors receive a docent-led tour. When I visited before I started the internship, I was very happy with this aspect. Tours are much more interesting to me than looking on my own.

iPhone or Android? Android

Favorite Color? Blue

Favorite Band/singer? The Beatles

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes? That’s tough…I guess one of my proudest achievements is receiving the department award in Spanish during my senior year. At a ceremony my Spanish teacher said great things about me which was very nice!

If you found yourself in Kafka’s Metamorphosis, transformed into an insect, what would it be and why? This is probably lame, but I would say a butterfly because I feel like seeing a transformation of yourself could be very exciting and powerful!

MEET THE INTERNS>> STEVEN

It’s that time of year: a new school year, which means new Campbell House interns! This semester we have an intrepid band of three tackling projects from working on a master timeline, diving into Campbell-related legal documents, and continuing the National Historic Landmark process. This week, we’re excited to introduce Steven, an undergraduate intern from UMSL’s history department. Take it away, Steven…

What are you studying and where? Currently studying history, Japanese, and economics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Why Campbell House? Considering I didn’t grow up in St. Louis (and my interest in history), I thought that interning at the Campbell House would provide further context to the history of St. Louis. Was I ever right!

What are you working on at CHM? The legal legacy of the Campbells (Editorial Note: This is an ongoing project involving trips to the St. Louis Circuit Court and Missouri State Archives office, digging up old legal documents concerning the Campbells and their businesses).

When you aren’t having a blast at Campbell House, what are you doing? Besides pursuing a history degree, I fill my time with training as a US Army Cadet, being the Vice President of the Japan-American Student Association at UMSL, and serving in my local church (Editorial Note: I don’t think I can ever complain about having too much to do again. Steven makes it look easy.).

What is your favorite thing about CHM so far? Learning about the history of the museum in particular in fascinating!

iPhone or Android? As my smartphone experience is only limited to the last month or so, I would be hesitant to advise anyone, but I chose Android.

Favorite color? Forest Green (Editorial Note: That’s so specific, we had to look up its RGB numbers! 34, 139, 34, in case you were wondering.)

Favorite band/singer? The Snow Patrol

Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. What happened in your 15 minutes? Last year with the Gateway Battalion Army ROTC, I was able to participate in a St. Louis Rams game color guard, in which we marched onto the field and presented the National, Missouri, and Army colors on ESPN. It was a great honor!

If you discovered an island, what would you name it? Names are significant to me because they convey meaning, so it would depend on the unique characteristics of the island.
